Cloudflare, Amazon CloudFront, and Fastly all use CDN infrastructure to handle massive amounts of web traffic worldwide. One of its biggest problems was how it handled requests. HTTP/1.1 handled requests one at a time, in order of connection. It could take 50 to 100 separate requests for a modern webpage to load fully (HTML, stylesheets, scripts, images, fonts). With HTTP/1.1, they had to wait in line for their turn. To get around this, developers used hacks such as combining files and spreading content across several subdomains.
HTTP/2, introduced in 2015, fixed this with multiplexing, which lets you send multiple requests over the same connection at the same time. Requests run in parallel instead of waiting in line.
HTTP/2 also added header compression, which made each request less heavy, and server push, which lets servers send resources to the browser before the browser even asks for them.
By upgrading the communication protocol without changing any website code, most websites saw a measurable speed boost. HTTP/3, which is based on the QUIC protocol, has taken this even further by speeding up connection setup and making connections more stable, like those on mobile networks.
